It all started with a double ear infection the weekend of General Conference {4/2/11} and ended with a severe allergic reaction to Amoxicillin. She was put on Amoxicillin and was immediately feeling better. Ten days later {Wednesday} she woke up with huge hives all over her body.
She was completely miserable and screamed all day, all night, and again all day Thursday. We gave her oatmeal baths, {I learned after that it should have been cool water}, cold compresses, and tons of Benadryl. {I also learned you can give Benadryl and Motrin or Tylenol for the pain} By Thursday she looked like this with the hives now spread to her face:
Thursday afternoon she couldn't walk, sleep, or eat and just cried. Kelsi woke up from her nap crying that her ear hurt so I called and got them both in to be checked at their doctors office. {On the way to the Dr. Office I asked Kelsi if her ear still hurt. I figured she would say no, and I would have made the appointment for nothing...she said, "A lot bit little much Mom." No clue what that even means but it made me laugh.} Kelsi had an ear infection and we made sure NOT to put her on Amoxicillin. For Kortlin they told us to just keep doing what we were doing and it would go away on its own....At about midnight I noticed her eye was almost swollen completely shut, her lips were swollen and so were her arms. I called the on-call nurse and was told to get her up to the ER. She was admitted into PICU a few hours later. They attempted 4 different times to give her an IV but her skin was so swollen that it wouldn't work.
{She was absolutely miserable but the nurses were so nice and spoiled her rotten by bringing all kinds of toys and games in for her. She was also spoiled by her Grandpa and Grandma Day, Uncle Derek, and Keli and Jon. Thank you, it made it a little easier for her which is why she is smiling in this picture!}
The Doctors told us they thought it could be Steven Johnson's Syndrome. They kept checking for white blisters in her mouth and eyes which thankfully she never had because later we found out it is fatal. The swollen skin on the arms and legs turns into blisters which makes the skin fall off. We are SO thankful and incredibly blessed she did not have this.
{During her stay in the hospital she told me, "Mom, my toes are twinkling" instead of tingling...cute!}
And here she is almost back to her normal self! It took 6 days for her to be able to walk again. Kortlin, we LOVE you so much and are glad you are okay!!
